Despite the dominance of abstract art in the 20th Century, some artists have remained representational throughout. Chief among these is David Hockney, represented at the Royal Academy this autumn with the exhibition, 82 Portraits and 1 Still Life. We will consider the portraits in the context of Hockney’s other work, before looking beyond the ‘real’ to the ‘surreal’, as embodied in two monographic exhibitions. Tate Britain will host Paul Nash, one of the most significant artists in Britain in the first half of the 20th Century, and an artist ripe for reappraisal. Tate Modern will be introducing Wifredo Lam, undoubtedly the most important artist ever to come out of Cuba, and deserving of greater attention. Together, the three exhibitions will make a harmonious whole, and should be a great introduction to the wealth of representational painting which continued, under the surface, to be a mainstay of modernism.
