LONDON ART STUDIES: THREE REVOLUTIONS: A HISTORY OF RUSSIAN ART

  • 171 Knightsbridge London, England, SW7 United Kingdom (map)

We will begin the morning’s lecture with a look at some of the artists who broke away from the art establishment in Russia in the 1860’s (including Ilya Repin and Ivan Kramskoy), followed by a look at the truly revolutionary artists at the beginning of the 20th Century: Malevich, Kandinsky and Tatlin. This will provide background to the Royal Academy’s forthcoming exhibition: Revolution:Russian Art 1917-1932, and consider a third group of artists, the ones whose work Lenin and Stalin considered appropriate for their new revolutionary world.
