This castle, officially named Her Majesty's Royal Palace and Fortress of the Tower of London, began with the building of The White Tower in 1078 by William the Conqueror. The White Tower was built to awe and terrify Londoners into submission and can be visited today, along with the Tower’s other historic relics such as The Crown Jewels, replicas of torture instruments used in the Tower and historic coins minted there. Legend has it that the seven ravens that live at the Tower protect the fortress.
