TATE BRITAIN
Millbank, London
SW1P 4RG
Hours
Daily 10am–6pm
Opened in 1897 by Sir Henry Tate, the Tate Britain is located along the northwestern banks of the Thames. Quieter than its sibling institution, the Tate Modern, its galleries are bright and tranquil, perfect for exploring British art from 1500 to the present. With masterpieces by Francis Bacon hanging alongside installations by Barbara Hepworth, the museum is known for its outstanding display of Turners in the Clore Gallery and for its always-controversial Turner Prize, which runs yearly from October to January.
ALIX Tip: To indulge in more art, take The Tate Boat (£6.80 one way with your Oyster card), which runs between the two museums every 40 minutes during gallery hours.
