The Barnes Foundation and Philadelphia

Day Trip to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Thursday, July 22nd 2021

Join us for an art-filled day trip to Philadelphia!

This ALIX tour offers a day-long experience in Philadelphia highlighting the Barnes Foundation, with an additional visit to the world-class Philadelphia Art Museum. Our day will begin and end in New York and we will travel via luxury transport to Philadelphia.

Dr. Albert C. Barnes was one of the most remarkable collectors of the twentieth century. His stunning collection includes masterpieces of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modern art. Originally installed in a house in suburban Merion, PA, the collection was reinstalled  in the heart of Philadelphia in 2012, in a building designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects that preserved the intimate scale of Dr. Barnes’s own exact and  final arrangement of his works within a beautifully sleek and innovative contemporary building.

We’ll view the Barnes permanent collection as well as the temporary exhibition Soutine/de Kooning: Conversations in Paint, which presents a visual dialogue between Chaïm Soutine and Willem de Kooning, two major twentieth-century artists.  Our tour will be accompanied by Sarah Lees, a curator and art historian who specializes in European art who will be with us throughout the day as our informal guide.

At the Philadelphia Museum, we will tour of the new wing of galleries designed by Frank Gehry and enjoy two exhibitions by contemporary artists: Senga Nengudi:Topologies Her provocative works reimagine the possibilities for abstract art through an exploration of both the Black female body and the collective practices of community and ritual. New Grit: Art & Philly Now which presents the works of twenty-five emerging and established artists with strong Philadelphia connections explore ideas of being and belonging through ceramics, fiber, glass, painting, photography, sculpture, video, and more.

Our full day will conclude with an early evening dinner at a restaurant that features delightful seasonal regional cuisine in a covid-safe setting.
