Leading our origami holiday workshop, Talo Kawasaki will begin with a brief history and discussion about the Origami Holiday Tree at the American Museum of Natural History where he is its co-designer. Talo thinks origami is absolutely ideal for holiday trees and decorations. Origami uses paper in all manner of colors, patterns and sizes — sometimes with single sheets and even multiple sheets as modular units for incredible geometric designs. And he also believes origami brings joy to everyone’s hearts, an important part of the holidays.
Talo will show us how to fold a couple of wonderful stars which are also used on the origami tree: the Saar Star and the modular Omega Star.
Materials Needed:
You will need square sheets of paper for this workshop which can be cut from printer paper or metallic foil or sturdy wrapping paper. For the first star, you need a square that is about 6 - 8 inches but you will also need a pair of scissors. Even though we’re starting with a square, Talo will show you how to fold and cut it into a pentagon.
For the second star, we will fold a modular star which means you will need 6 square sheets, all the same size. 6 inch squares or larger are best for the first time. They can all be the same color or a variety of colors for something fancier.
Sources for pre-cut square paper or origami paper are your local of art supply stores, as well as online. Talo suggests the online OrigamiUSA store, The Origami Source, as a great place for metallic foil square sheets. https://origamiusa.org/catalog/paper

Although Talo Kawasaki has folded origami since he was boy in New Orleans, his passion for it has only developed within the past decade as a teacher, creator and artist. He’s best known online as the creator of the Patty Bat, an origami action model with flapping wings and sound. For the last seven trees, Talo has been co-designer of the Origami Holiday Tree with Ros Joyce. And been the origami “wrangler” for three regional productions of “Animals Out of Paper,” including the recent production at Arc Stages in Pleasantville, NY earlier this year.
In Fall 2018, Talo had his first solo exhibition involving painted origami of Michael LaFosse butterflies and he can be seen in a featured video for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Origami Elephant Challenge, a public awareness campaign for the relentless killing of African elephants.
