Designated as a historic landmark, the library’s 1911 main branch is located in Bryant Park and is a magnificent example of Beaux-Arts architecture. It is home to the stone literary lions, Patience and Fortitude, named by then Mayor LaGuardia in 1930 for the qualities he felt New Yorkers would need to survive the economic depression. The interior is exquisite, particularly the main reading room. The library can be freely enjoyed through its public programs and exhibitions. Like all great libraries, should you choose to catch up on work in this environment, you will find the collective intellectual rigor palatable!
