Photography has always had a troubled relationship to the truth, from staged images of the American Civil War to airbrushed celebrities in contemporary magazine photography. Contemporary fine art photographers often celebrate this uncertainty, producing images that call into question the veracity of the images that surround us every day. The artists under discussion (including Thomas Demand, Cindy Sherman & Oliver Laric) create staged images, tinker in post-production, or invent impossible scenarios that disturb and challenge our expectations.
