As a follow-up to our 21st September class, this study morning will demonstrate that Abstract Expressionism was not a purely male affair. The exhibition will include works by Helen Frankenthaler, Lee Krasner (“Mrs Jackson Pollock”), Joan Mitchell and Louise Nevelson – a sculptor rather than a painter – and we will spend the first two 30-minute talks focusing on them. In the final talk we will look beyond Abstract Expressionism to consider other female artists in predominantly male movements. These include Pauline Boty, who during her short life was considered on a par with Hockney and Blake but who is now all but forgotten, and Bridget Riley, supported and promoted by Abstract Expressionist Barnett Newman, who among other things helped her to secure America’s first copyright law for the visual arts.
