German Gymnasium is a massive freestanding space, built in 1865 as London’s first purpose-built gym. Today it is a marvelous restaurant styled after the grand brasseries of Europe and serving Central European-inspired comfort food in a space characterized by high ceilings, perfect symmetry, gray and pink accents and a single monolithic black staircase taking you to the sophisticated upstairs restaurant on the second floor. The space still possesses some of its original features, such as its timber roof trusses and cast iron hooks from which athletes swung. The restaurant includes the trendy nightlife spot, Meister Bar and a heated outdoor terrace. The Grand Café serves food all day on the ground floor.
