DIA BEACON

We will leave the City and head up the Hudson to our first stop, Dia Beacon in Beacon, New York. Occupying a former Nabisco box-printing factory on the banks of the Hudson River, Dia Beacon presents the majority of Dia’s collection of art from the 1960s to the present as well as special exhibitions, new commissions, and public and education programs. Dia Foundation was established by one of the members of the Menil family, whose significant patronage of the arts includes the creation of the Rothko Chapel in Houston and the preservation of Robert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty, as well as numerous other permanent installations in New York City. Since its opening in May 2003, Dia Beacon has helped transform the city of Beacon into a vibrant arts destination for visitors from the region, New York City, and beyond.

The key design elements of the 300,000 square foot factory building made it an appealing site for contemporary art, including broad spans between supporting columns and more than 34,000-square-feet of skylights. Today these skylights provide natural light in the galleries and have uniquely established Dia Beacon as a “daylight museum.”

In keeping with Dia’s history of single-artist, site-related presentations, each gallery was designed specifically for the installation of one artist’s work with installations by Richard Serra and Dan Flavin. We will also be able to see Andy Warhol’s Shadows, a single painting in multiple parts. Shadows is one of Warhol’s most abstract works, yet one that cohesively synthesizes key elements of his practice, including film, painting, photography, and screen printing.

MANITOGA

Following lunch at DIA, we will head down the Hudson to Garrison to Manitoga/The Russel Wright Design Center, the former home and 75-acre woodland garden of American industrial designer Russel Wright. Manitoga is the embodiment of Wright’s design philosophy and life’s work and celebrates good design for living in creative harmony with nature through tours, programs, events.

The House and Studio interiors are defined by expanses of glass, innovative materials, and seamless connections to outside terraces. We will then explore the Russel & Mary Wright Design Gallery, built to permanently display the Wrights’ ground-breaking designs for the American home.
