A Return Visit to The Barnes Foundation and Philadelphia Museum of Art
A Full Day of Art - Friday, November 12th
The Barnes Foundation
With the success of our summer visits to the Barnes Foundation and the Philadelphia Museum we decided to return this fall with another full day of art and dining. There is so much more to see at both institutions as well as other cultural resources to enjoy. As an option, we can plan an overnight to explore more in the city!
Barnes Foundation
Our day will begin at the Barnes Foundation. Dr. Albert C. Barnes’s stunning collection includes masterpieces of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and Modern art, all installed in unique ensembles that he himself devised. Since it’s too much to take in on a single visit, we’ll view rooms that we missed on our first trip! As well as the permanent collection, we’ll also view the exhibition Suzanne Valadon: Model, Painter, Rebel, which explores the groundbreaking work of the French, self-taught artist who challenged society’s norms as she made her way in the art world. We will end our visit at the Barnes with lunch.

Philadelphia Museum of Art
At the Philadelphia Museum, we will see part of the unprecedented retrospective Jasper Johns: Mind/Mirror, presenting one of the major figures of contemporary art in a display of his most famous paintings, prints, and sculptures, as well as lesser-known and recent work. (The other part of the retrospective is simultaneously open at the Whitney, which we’ll visit on a separate ALIX trip.) Also on view is a survey of work by the pioneering artist, Emma Amos, educator and activist whose work explored identity and privilege. We can also explore some of the spaces in the historic building that are newly redesigned by Frank Gehry, and sample portions of the incomparably rich permanent collection.
We expect the day to end in Philadelphia around 7:00.
