In an otherwise uninspired Manhattan neighborhood, Esca is both a wonderful retreat from the heaving tourist crowds on the sidewalks outside as well as a great option for pre- or post-theater dining. The lemony walls and deep chocolate-colored banquettes serve as a soothing palette through which Chefs Dave Pasternack, Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich serve southern Italian seafood. Revered for its less-is-more approach to food, Esca is renowned for its impossibly fresh crudo dishes, best described as Italian sashimi, as well as its flavorful pastas and fabulous whole fish dishes. This is a wonderful option in this neighborhood and is ideal for al fresco dining in balmier weather.
