In 2017 the Royal Academy seems determined to restart the Cold War with two exhibitions of American and Russian art at the same time. London Art Studies will devote a morning to each. On 25 January Icons of American Art will focus on some key paintings – Whistler’s Mother, Grant Wood’s American Gothic and Rauschenberg’s Retroactive II in talks which will consider the early history of painting in America before studying the RA’s After the Fall, and Tate Modern’s Robert Rauschenberg in depth.
